Sometimes, on Saturdays, I will pick my top 5 Japanese songs and say a few things about them – as to what they mean to me and why they’re special (i.e., how they make me feel or what they make me think about).
*EDIT* This was supposed to happen every week, but I found that time currently does not allow me that…
A little note before starting this: I don’t speak Japanese properly, like I usually say it ‘少しだけ’ (‘just a little’). I finished a beginner’s course in my first year here at uni and the next year I would have started the pre-intermediate course, but it didn’t run for various reasons. So now I try to learn Japanese with Moro, whenever time allows us, by watching anime (mostly), listening to Japanese music and watching Japanese films, and at the same time looking up and taking notes of various words/expressions/idioms.
Anyway, as much as I can, I try not to look at the English translation and instead to look up certain words that I don’t know and try to fit them into the context of the lyrics. Of course, there’s a huge chance I’ll get the meaning totally wrong, but there’s nothing stopping me from trying as long as I’m open to standing corrected. Besides, after watching anime and getting used to listening to Japanese, I think it’s safe for me to assume that I’m not the only one out there who can ‘feel’ what the lyrics might mean.
I also want to mention that sometimes, I think of certain lyrics as ‘food for thought’, while at other times I just take them for what they are: lyrics. And this is because I can’t possibly know what the artists had in mind when they wrote the lyrics; this might lead to my overthinking their ‘meaning’ and so interpret them in a certain way – which might as well be ‘wrong’ (I don’t think there’s any ‘wrong’ way per se out there, it’s just our own bias to see things, first and foremost, from our own perspective). What I mean to say is that everything is open to interpretation and everybody may do it in their own way and there’s no right or wrong way – in my opinion. So, while sometimes I’ll just say ‘I love the lyrics of this song just because I do’, some other times I might end up writing a ‘novel’ explaining what certain songs’ lyrics make me think of.
As always, as long as you enjoy what you find here, please bear with me! Thank you and hope you enjoy your stay!
